50 Year Class Reunion August 19, 2017

The Bedford High School Class of 1967 held our 50-year class reunion on the evening of August 19, 2017, at the Winking Lizard Party Center in Bedford Heights. We had a great turnout, with people coming in from all over the country to connect with old friends.

It’s hard to imagine it’s been fifty years since we thronged the hallways at BHS. We had to make do without all the electronic help our children and grandchildren enjoy. The school system may have owned one computer, and that was for record keeping, not education. Some of us carried pocket slide rules, because pocket calculators were still a few years off. We learned to type on manual typewriters, took pictures on film, learned skilled trades that are rarely used today, and got to know a great bunch of kids who are still friends all these years later. If we wanted to see something on television, we had to watch it when it was broadcast, or hope to catch a re-run, for there was no DVR, nor even a home VCR yet.

Not only did corporal punishment still exist, the kids in the woodshop class got to make the paddles.

Then we graduated. Some went to work, some went to college, some went into the military, and some ended up doing all three. From time to time we might pull out our old yearbooks, look at the pictures, and wonder what those people looked like now. There were all those little blurbs we wrote to each other, and signed with our first names, because it never occurred to us that fifty years later we might not remember which “John” wrote which little paragraph.

If someone had told us what our world would be like today, we’d have probably said something about watching Star Trek too often. The idea that we’d own personal computers, much less have something more powerful than anything NASA was using on our phones, would have seemed ridiculous at the time. Yet now we have all this, and the digital world was a great help when we had to find classmates after all these years. A lot of us are connected on Facebook, or Classmates. We share pictures of our accomplishments, of silly things we’ve run across, and of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nearly all of us are now significantly older than our parents were when we graduated.

Since this website was first created, ten years ago, we’ve had our 40-year reunion, on June 23, 2007, at the KofC Hall in Bedford, a 60th Birthday Bash at Pete’s Pub at Roseland Lanes on September 19, 2009, and our 45-year reunion, also at Roseland, on September 15, 2012. Now we’ve had the 50-year. How many more will there be? Who can say?
